Pt 1. Building An Online Presence – aka The Pieces to Building a Website . . .

Part One – Before Building Your New Site

A few points to remember as you develop your online presence:

•    Your site, more than likely, will be the ‘First Impression’ that your potential client/customer will have of you and your business

•    Keep your site free of blinking ads and other distractions that commonly come with the ‘free’ websites or free site builder applications

•    Pay for a domain name and hosting account – that way you OWN the name and website!

•    If you are not web savvy then do spend the money having someone develop your initial site, graphics, opt-in forms, shopping cart and other applications

•    Do your research and create a budget and timeline that works for you!

Here are a few suggestions that you should keep in mind before building your site:

1.    Know your customer and niche – your purpose.

2.    Find 3 – 5 other sites that you like – the look & feel . . . make a list – what do you love about those sites; the layout, colors, flow – navigation, sales pages, etc. – that will be YOUR Do List!

3.    Find 3 – 5 other sites that you do not like at all – again, make a list and notate those – that will be YOUR Don’t List!

4.    Know your competition – who else is doing what you are doing – what are they offering and what sets you apart from them and what they offer.

5.    Set your strategy – each page has a purpose; the

•    About Page is about you and what you bring to the client,
•    Call To Action is where you have your ‘Sales’ or telling the reader to CLICK HERE TO …
•    Irresistible Free Offer – an opt-in place for you to gather names and emails while giving your guest a ‘FREE’ example of what you are about; an eBook, 20 min session, How-To-Do document, etc.

6.    Create a Plan – I love to pull out the ‘Sticky Notes’ and create a mock-up site on a blank wall . . . each Note is a page on my site and will act as my Mind Map or Blueprint for the site….  you can also use WORD or Mind Map software to help you with this too.

7.    Content – aka Copy –  Plan your content as if you were having a conversation with your ‘Ideal Client’… ie. on your ‘Homepage’ you might consider a statement that talks about what you do (what is your business) and how you are an Expert in that business, address the potential pain of the client and how you’ve been there and can help them through that pain etc.

8.    Be Patient – once you have your site built – take time to review for content, spelling, grammar, and have a few trusted friends review the site – ask them to be honest and get their feedback on the look & feel and content – ask them what they understand about what you (your site) is all about!
